POESIA-NARRATIVA

POEMS-FICTION

In this section you can find a little taste of my poetical and narrative production. Lately i spend little time for fiction, something more to the poems (possess the gift of density, that for my contemplative attitude is priceless) and to dramatic writing (see Theatre).

Mestre on the streets is a part of the organic project Cities on the streets, that is a kind of street guide, a city guide of writers. Started wth Rome on the streets (Azimut, 2007), continued with Milan, Naples, Rome 2 (Azimut, 2009), went on with others nations - with Brazil on the streets - Latinoamericana (Azimut, 2009) and Prague on the streets (Azimut, 2010).

The short stories of the book have, as a common theme, the setting: Mestre, the city, its districts, its streets.

The authors, through theirs writings, have created a mosaic of stories, plots, characters, roles and situations, outlining a map varied and fascinating of the city, which is in this way slowly revealing its topography, its worlds.

Mestre, outpost on the mainland and bridge to the incantation of Venice, from the industrial hub of Marghera to the baby boom, from the urban devastation of 70s to the economic crisis of our age, from the new highway to the current modernity of a city that wants to be at the forefront, has in its many shades an incredible number of stories to tell.

The project is no profit: the incomes of the series are donated to organizations working with children, and those of Mestre on the streets will be donated to AIPD (Italian Association of People Down) based on Squero Street, in Mestre.

My short story chosen by Nuzzolo for Mestre on the streets is titled Departures, returns.

It is the story of a very short return in the hometown by a kind of psicopatic man (nothing autobiographical!). In the short time that passes in Mestre to attend to some bureaucratic procedures, the protagonist of the story find the time to impersonate a professional killer and to do a memorable (just to say) pinball challenge with a strange friend of the past.

But before leaving the city, he also gathers the threads of memory and understands the links with the microcosm of the neighborhood where he was born.

Here the beginning of the story:

DEPARTURES, RETURNS (Mestre on the streets, pages 41-53)

I'm a monomaniac. A maniac of uniqueness. I've never read the same book twice. I've never seen the same movie twice. I have never listened twice to the same long playing. Think that I don’t like to speak twice to the same person. And, above all, in my life I've never bought a return ticket. When I had to buy a train ticket to return to Mestre, I felt a slight discomfort. But what do I get back? I am a man of one way only. I consider the return to the place from which I started many years ago as a kind of defeat of my plan of endless escape.

Mestre was now a faded name in the topography of my emotions, only a distant point in space and time, which I had forgotten for years, that I did not want to reconnect to my existence.

But here I am, on the train, still distant but already connected to my sad city through this endless string of sleepers that slip along too fast underneath me.

The train is hypnagogic. The noise produced by the wheels rubbing on the joints of the rails infiltrates in my consciousness a near-sleep that is a blessing. At least it serves to soothe the discomfort. I remember so little of Mestre....

Bandiera

Flag

Eccola:

Donne che piangono dietro la porta

mentre i ragazzi stanno giocano

giocano sempre allo stesso vecchio gioco

sotto quella bandiera insanguinata

mentre i ragazzi stanno crescendo

maledendo lo stesso vecchio gioco

sotto quella bandiera bruciata

Flag is a poem on the stupidty of the war that I wrote (originally in English) many years ago. It has been conceived, in my naive imagination of the time, as a tribute to the american poet Gregory Corso. The graphic layout of the text (that I can not reproduce here) was shaped like a flag with a star on the top left. It was published in the first and unique issue of the fanzine Tribuk.

Here it is:

Women crying behind the door

while the boys are playing

always playing to the same old game

under that bloody flag

general says come on boys

general says victory is not so far away

while the women prepare the lunch

waiting someone back to eat

while the women prepare the soup

with their bitter tears inside

Women crying in front of the door

while the boys are growing up

searing to the same old game

under that burned flag

general says it's easy to do

general says I did it so many times

while the boys are hungry for life

running through deserts cornfields

while the women read the certificate

with no more tears

with no more words

Darkness and colors

Buio e colori

abita

i colori

e abbraccia

con sorrisi

che ovviamente

scambiamo

per amore

A very short poem born in a not so happy moment, but i like it. Dedicated to the english poet John Donne.

Don't look

for the residence

of darkness

into the womb

of the night

Darkness

lives

into the colors

and embraces

with smiles

that obviously

we mistake

for love

Quattro tempi

cromo/crono

monotono

monocromo

tempo-sangue

cagliato

dagli inganni

Movimento tre

Tutto è tempo

e tutto il tempo

tempo-morte

incagliato

sulle illusioni

Movimento due

Tutto è tempo

e tutto il tempo

tempo-anima

Movimento quattro

Tutto è tempo

amore

tutto è tempo

solo

tempo

che passa

e talvolta

incespica

nell'accorgersi

casualmente

che noi siamo

assurdamente

lontani

Four times

I know it is not too original, but so it is. The more I become older,  the more the passing of time plays a central role in my reflections. Four times comes from this constant obsession.

First movement

All is time

and all the time

Third movement

All is time

and all the time

Second movement

All is time

and all the time

is blue

Fourth movement

All is time

Solo sole

dappertutto

mi metto

a seccare

i funghi

dell'alta Val Zoldana

nel terrazzo assolato

li taglio fini

o almeno ci provo

con il coltello sbagliato

e li dispongo

ordinatamente

o almeno ci provo

sul giornale

di oggi

così seppellisco

le crisi

gli omicidi

i premi

i vincitori

le elezioni

i disastri

gli sconfitti

la letteratura

i campionati

e tutto l'universo

sotto una distesa

di fette di porcini

dell'alta Val Zoldana

dopo

quando sarò

meno stanco

penserò

alla cena

Only sun

The italian title is not fully translatable in english.  The italian word "solo" corresponds at the english words "only" and "alone". So the translation of the title can be "Only sun" or "Alone, sun".

I chose the first one.

The poem is dedicated to my father's memory.

The Zoldan Valley, mentioned in the text, is a beautiful valley that lies between the mountains Civetta and Pelmo in the north of my region, Veneto.

Now that I have

the same smell

as my father's

and that I forget

things

everywhere

I start

to dry

the mushrooms

of the high Zoldan Valley

in the sunny terrace

I cut them thin

or at least I try

with a wrong knife

and I put them

orderly

or at least I try

over

the today's newspaper

so I bury

crises

murders

awards

winners

elections

disasters

losers

literature

championships

and the whole universe

under an expanse

of sliced mushrooms

of the high Zoldan Valley

later

when I am

less tired

I'll think

about dinner

Spesso

ascolto le voci

e provo

di continuo

ad intromettermi

nei discorsi

degli altri

ad accomunarmi

ai dolori

degli altri

lasciando

ad un giudizio casuale

ma perfetto

decidere

se sia

contiguità necessaria

combinazione opportuna

o solo insolenza

accoppiare

il mio fiato pastoso

alle esistenze altrui

e provo

ad immaginare

una porzione di vita

in cui

non sia

necessaria

la passione feroce

degli eroi

per essere

accettati

A piece of life

This is the last poem I wrote. It came like this , suddendly, an evening. I have not worked too much on it, as usual, and perhaps it needs some finishing touch again.

For the moment I propose it as it is, with a provisional title.

Often

I listen to voices

and I try

constantly

to intrude myself

into the speeches

of the others

to mingle myself

to the pains

of the others

leaving

to a casual judgment

but perfect

to decide

if it is

necessary contiguity

suitable combination

or only insolence

to pair off

my pasty breath

to the others' existences

and I try

to imagine

a piece of life

where

it is not

necessary

the fierce passion

of heroes

to be

accepted
