Ur-Hamlet, ovvero dell'indecisione è stato il mio primo e unico one man show.
Spengo l'ultima candela. Buio. Fine. Molto, molto suggestivo. Applausi, prego.
about 1990
Ur-Hamlet, or of indecision was my first and only one man show. After the dissolution of the theatre company "Teatro Erbavoglio" I had still a great desire to play Hamlet but, rightly, no one of my colleagues wanted to compare themselves with such a masterpiece.
Then I did everything by myself. I fonded my one-man show theatre company (Teatro avec elefante), I made a small wooden Elizabethan theatre, I did puppets and marionettes, I wrote the play keeping, by Shakespeare, only the famous monologue. The funny thing of the show, besides the fact of being Hamlet told through the puppets (string marionettes, puppets, japanese marionettes) was that I was using the head of a spectator, randomly selected from the audience (usually I chose a bald man), like the skull that Hamlet holds in his hand during the monologue. The scene was hilarious, the contrast between the touching text of the monologue and the face of the victim in my hands was estranging. The show, lighted by candles, ended with the progressive shutdown of the candles while I was performing a small piece taken from Macbeth: "Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets upon the stage and is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." I turn out the last candle. Darkness. The end. Very, very evocative. Applause, please.
